Cause Introduction
On International Women’s Day, WaterAid's analysis of Institute of Health Metrics figures revealed a startling fact: illnesses related to a lack of water, basic sanitation, and hygiene claimed the lives of nearly 800,000 women globally in a single year. This staggering number makes it the fifth leading cause of death among women, trailing only behind heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In India, over 95 million toilets have been constructed since October 2014, representing significant progress in sanitation infrastructure. However, a critical concern arises when it comes to the maintenance and cleanliness of these facilities, especially public toilets in schools, colleges, and public places. Dirty and unhygienic toilets pose a severe threat to women's health, potentially leading to infections and cross-contamination, including the risk of pathological leukorrhea, uterine infections, and cervical cancer.
To address this issue, the Ladli Foundation introduces the Navneekaran Project, focusing not just on toilet construction but also on their proper maintenance and cleanliness. This involves regular cleaning, ensuring an adequate supply of water and hygiene products, and implementing proper waste management. The Navneekaran Project has also undertaken the construction of separate toilets for boys and girls, contributing to gender-equitable facilities.
